The Thrill of the Track: My Journey in Motorsports - JP Hanna
Posted on April 05 2025
Cars have always been a part of my life. Growing up, I had my fair share of them, and it’s safe to say my fascination with vehicles runs deep. But my real dive into motorsports began in a more unexpected way—on the track.
How Did I Start?
It all began at Grattan Raceway in Belding, Michigan. I was invited to a track day event, and while I went in excited, I quickly found myself humbled by the reality of my driving skills. The learning curve was steep, but it didn’t take long for me to become completely hooked on the adrenaline rush. Six months after my first track day, I had already converted my 1997 BMW 328i into a manual transmission. From that moment on, I was on the track almost every week.
My Favorite Car for the Track
When I first started attending HPDE (High-Performance Driver Education) track days, I was primarily driving BMWs. Between my 1997 BMW 328i, 2005 330i ZHP, and 2008 335xi, I have a soft spot for the 2005 330i. That car was a gem. With its 6-speed manual transmission, TC Kline coilovers, UUC sway bars, limited-slip differential, and Hawk pads, it was a track beast. It wasn’t the most powerful car on the track, but it was tight, fast enough, and nearly bulletproof. Every lap was pure joy.
My Favorite Track
While I’ve spent most of my time racing around Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin, there are two tracks that really stand out to me: **Road America** and **Mid-Ohio**. Both tracks offer a unique combination of speed, technicality, and elevation changes that challenge even the most seasoned drivers. The undulating terrain and complex corners at these venues make every lap feel like an exciting adventure. If you ever get the chance to experience either of them, I highly recommend it.
The Best Track Day Experience
For me, track days were always about pushing my skills to the limit—learning how to drive better, smoother, and faster. It was exhilarating to test my abilities and refine my technique. But what really made the experience special was the people. The track community is full of incredibly knowledgeable, passionate, and kind individuals. It was through these interactions that I gained invaluable insights and built friendships that I still cherish today.
The Worst Experience
Like any motorsport enthusiast, I’ve had my fair share of mishaps—thankfully, most of them were minor. One standout incident occurred when I was a passenger in a Lotus Exige at Waterford Hills Raceway in Clarkston, Michigan. We took the S’s too hot, and the car ended up crashing head-on into a guardrail. Miraculously, we both walked away unscathed, but it was a sobering reminder of how quickly things can go wrong.
Then there was the infamous “money shift” at Mid-Ohio. It’s called a money shift because it’s expensive—real expensive. On my second lap of the day, I accidentally grabbed second gear at 105 mph. The result? A cracked engine block, a bent connecting rod, a missing piston, and a massive hole in the oil pan that spilled seven quarts of oil all over the track. It was a terrifying moment, but somehow I managed to keep the car straight and decelerate without losing control. Fortunately, the oil didn’t catch fire, and I made it out without further disaster. The lesson here: always select gears with an open palm to let the synchros handle the alignment.
Advice for Newcomers
If you’re new to the world of track days, here’s my advice: **take your time**. Start by learning car control, mastering the proper techniques, and understanding the lines on the track. Resist the urge to immediately start modding your car. The foundation you build will pay off in the long run.
A few key tips:
- Smooth is fast: Don’t rush. Smooth inputs will help you maintain control and carry more speed through corners.
- Focus on what’s in front of you. Don’t drive by your mirrors. If someone is faster than you, let them pass and learn from their lines.
- Remember: it’s a journey. Progress takes time.
About Me
Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, I have a deep connection to the automotive world. I currently work in **Global Supply Chain** within the automotive industry, which keeps me closely tied to the world of cars and parts.
When I’m not on the track or talking cars with friends, you’ll find me enjoying some leisure time on my road bike. While my running days are behind me, I still enjoy taking a fast loop through the neighborhood on two wheels.
And of course, I enjoy connecting with fellow car enthusiasts on UsedRacingTires.com, where I get to chat about all things tires and racing with customers who share the same passion.
Conclusion
Motorsports have been a major part of my life for years. From my humble beginnings at Grattan Raceway to the highs and lows that come with the sport, I’ve learned so much along the way. The thrill of pushing both car and driver to the limit is unlike anything else. If you’re thinking about getting into track days or motorsports in general, I highly encourage you to take the plunge. Just remember to be patient, learn the ropes, and most importantly—enjoy the ride.
